In 2016, SanDisk unveiled their first 1TB SD Card. Sam Nicholson, CEO of Stargate Studios and member of the American Society of Cinematographers said that:
"Just a few short years ago the idea of a 1TB capacity point in an SD card seemed so futuristic – it’s amazing that we’re now at the point where it’s becoming a reality. With the growing demand for applications like VR, we can certainly use 1TB when we’re out shooting continuous high-quality video. High-capacity cards allow us to capture more without interruption, streamlining our workflow, and eliminating the worry that we may miss a moment because we have to stop to swap out cards"
Now in 2019, both SanDisk and Micron launched their first microSD card with 1TB storage - Smaller form factor with same storage space. Amazing right? This could be a good news for audiophiles because microSD is the most commonly used external storage in DAPs.
For SanDisk, this is a UHS-I U3 microSD card designed primarily for smartphones. It offers read speeds of up to 160MB/sec, and write speeds of up to 90MB/sec. For Micron wise, they are offering a 1TB capacity UHS-I U3 microSD card with read speeds of 100MB/s and write speeds of up to 95MB/s. Both of them are offering A2 performance classification and a V30 minimum sustained write speed.
How these 2 microSD cards work with DAPs in the market now? This is still a myth and more tests will be carried out once it is available in the market.
